At Elon University we have a thing called “winter term” where in the month of January students have the opportunity to study abroad, intern, or take 1 class.
This winter term I am one of four students interning in the Admissions Office. We work in four areas of the office – hospitality nights, campus visits, records department and event organization.
This weekend I traveled to D.C. and King of Prussia with admissions staff and faculty members to present the Elon student viewpoint, talk with prospective students and parents and answer questions.
For campus visits, the interns review the counselor group sessions and accompany counselors in meetings with prospective students and families.
We have learned about the communications management component and learn the process of assembling a file and admissions decision-making. We have also reviewed the website and publications and will present our ideas for improvement to staff members later on.
We also assist in planning aspects of various admissions events.
I have been interested in working as an admissions counselor since my freshmen year and I have enjoyed learning more about the workings of the office.
